Autonomous computer bots and desktop AI agents, explained

Autonomous computer bots are AI agents that can operate software on your behalf. This guide explains how they work, why safety matters, and how iMpact is designing ORION as a supervised autonomous computer assistant.

What is an autonomous computer bot?

A task automation bot is software that completes work for you. An autonomous computer bot — often called a desktop AI automation agent — goes further: it reads what is on screen, decides what to do next and operates apps the way a person would.

How desktop AI agents work

Most designs share the same loop:

  • Context: understand the goal and what is currently on screen.
  • Planning: break the goal into ordered steps.
  • Action: use permitted tools to perform one step.
  • Review: check the result and decide the next step or stop.

Why safety comes first

A bot that can click and type anywhere can also make mistakes anywhere. Good autonomous computer assistants need clear permissions, visible plans, an instant stop control and a readable record of every action.

iMpact's approach with ORION

ORION is being designed as a supervised autonomous computer assistant: it plans openly, asks before acting and works one visible step at a time. Today those principles run inside the iMpact website. Desktop-level control is in development and is not available yet — we label it that way on purpose.

FAQ

Can I download ORION as a desktop bot?
Not yet. Desktop automation is in development. You can try ORION's planning and confirmed actions on the website today.
Are autonomous computer bots safe?
They can be, when they use clear permissions, show plans before acting and keep a record. That is the design ORION follows.
